Greyhound buses from LA and San Francisco stop every two hours downtown at 34 W Carrillo St; trains arrive at the old Southern Pacific station at 209 State St, a block west of US-101. The visitors centers are at 12 E Carrillo St (Mon-Sat 9am-5pm; tel 805/966-9222 or 1-800/676-1266, ) and 1 Santa Barbara St, East Beach (Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 10am-5pm; tel 805/965-3021). You can walk to most places, although a frequent shuttle bus (25¢ per ride) loops around Santa Barbara during the day, with the Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District (tel 805/683-3702, ) covering the outlying areas into the evening.
